MISSION
The mission of the physical education, health and drivers education department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills that are the foundation for living a healthy, happy and safe life. The acquisition of the skills is not enough however, we will also push our students to apply these physical and life skills to every aspect of their ongoing future. The programs will be sequential and based on physical activities and classroom activities set forth in an active, caring, supportive and accepting learning environment in which every student is challenged and successful.
PROGRAM GOALS
Develop the skills necessary to participate in a variety of lifetime activities; Understand the importance and what it takes to be a well-rounded healthy individual; Understand the value of a personal wellness plan; Build positive relationships through team building activities and academic activities; Demonstrate the skills necessary to be a contributing member of society; Identify the importance of safety in all settings; And understand and value the principles of nutrition, physical health, driving, stress management, drug prevention and healthy relationships.
COURSES
Physical Education I
This course focuses on the fundamental components of nutrition, physical education, principles of fitness, emphasizes skill development, knowledge of activities, fitness, sportsmanship, and makes every effort to create optimistic attitudes through a variety of instructional activities. Students will participate in a variety of activities such as: aerobics, cardio kickboxing, yoga/breathing exercises, Pilates, kinesthetic activities, juggling, power walking, circuit fitness, weight lifting exercises, resistance band exercises, stability ball exercises, social dance routines and recreational games. This course will also follow safety guidelines, proper technique, and exercise principles. Students will also learn strategies to help them begin, design, and maintain an exercise program to keep them fit for life.
Physical Education II
This course focuses on further development of physical education, various principles of fitness, skill development, knowledge of activities, sportsmanship, and team building. It makes every effort to create optimistic attitudes and a positive self-image through a variety of instructional activities. Students will participate in a variety of activities including: team sports skills (soccer, rugby), power walking, jogging, team building, various circuit and fitness classes using different equipment, social dance, and recreational games. This course will always follow safety guidelines, proper technique, and exercise principles. Students will learn strategies to help them begin, design, and maintain an exercise program. Students will be provided with guidance and support to be physically fit for life.
Health
This course is designed to promote awareness of physical, mental, emotional and social developmental needs for optimal health throughout life. Students will participate in a variety of activities that will help them to understand the social, mental, and physical influences that affect total health and behavior. The course is constructed to aid each student in developing a lifestyle that promotes wellness by providing up-to-date health related information as a basis for making informed personal health decisions. Instructional activities in the course will include team activities, presentations, lecture and independent work-study. Students will use textbooks as well as videos and computer programs to further their understanding of the course material.
Driver’s Education
The goal of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the driving task and the responsibilities that go along with becoming a safe driver. They will learn all the rules of the road including traffic laws, signs, signals, and roadway markings. Throughout the course they will learn how to identify and react to hazardous situations. By the end of the course the students will be able to develop a positive and defensive attitude towards driving.
